Terry Heller's introduction examines the work within the mainstream of American literature, and detailed annotation, as well as a list of the plant and herb lore to which Jewett makes reference, further illuminate these tales.

About the Author

Sarah Orne Jewett (1849–1909) was the daughter of a physician in Berwick, Maine. Her books include Deephaven, The Country of the Pointed Firs, and nine volumes of short stories.
