Bitten: Women of the Otherworld, Book 1by Kelley Armstrong
Synopses & Reviews
With rights already sold in seven countries, Bitten is a daring literary suspense novel that is causing an international sensation. Ever since her parents were killed in a car accident when she was five, Elena Michaels has longed for a normal family life. Smart, beautiful, and engaged to be married, Elena hopes to fulfill that dream when disaster strikes. Not only has her fiancé lied about his secret life as a werewolf, but he's made her one, too. She has no choice but to join him at Stonehaven, the upstate New York home of an elite pack of werewolves.
In an attempt to break away, she moves to Toronto to lead a normal life. Working as a journalist, Elena now lives with her new architect boyfriend, works out in the basement gym of their high-rise apartment, lunches with girlfriends from the office, and — once a week, at four in the morning — runs naked and furred through a downtown Toronto ravine, ripping out the throats of her animal prey. But when a band of outlaw werewolves threatens the Stonehaven pack, Elena's feral instincts drive her back there to join the defense. What follows is a war for territory, for pride, and ultimately for Elena herself.
Writing with the visceral power of Anne Rice, Kelley Armstrong has created a fascinating story of a woman struggling for her identity.
"It's not easy to find a fresh angle for the werewolf theme, but this debut novel...proves that solid storytelling and confident craftsmanship can rejuvenate one of the hoariest of all horror cliches....Filled with romance and supernatural intrigue, this book will surely remind readers of Anne Rice's sophisticated refurbishings of the vampire story." Publishers Weekly
"Armstrong's lycanthropology, though vivid, lacks the depth of Whitley Streiber's epic The Last Vampire, but it's as smooth as cream all the way, sure to gain fans." Kirkus Reviews
"Armstrong puts a new spin on the old werewolf tales and has created a well-written, thought-provoking novel to boot....More than just fast-paced action, this book offers an allegory of the difficulties with which one struggles when life takes an entirely unplanned and unwanted route....[Elena] is a feisty, tough character, easy to like, and with a good lesson to share." School Library Journal
"While the plot is as predictable as gang warfare, readers will cheer for Elena as she beats up the big boys and has the courage to choose her own path." Library Journal
"A hair-raising story for the she-wolf in us all." Shannon Olsen, author of Welcome to My Planet
"It's terrific. I'm a sucker for this kind of novel the heroine is the most appealing I have come across in ages. It's clever, quirky, hip, and funny, skating between genres with style and grace. More, please!" Joanne Harris, author of Chocolat
Now a TV series on the Syfy channel airing Mondays at 10 pm / 9 pm CT.
"Frisky...Tells a rather sweet love story, and suggests that being a wolf may be more comfortable for a strong, smart woman than being human." -The New York Times Book Review
Elena Michaels seems like the typically strong and sexy modern woman, She lives with her architect boyfriend, writes for a popular newspaper, and works out at the gym. She's also a werewolf.
Elena has done all she can to assimilate to the human world, but the man whose bite changed her existence forever, and his legacy, continue to haunt her. Thrown into a desperate war for survival that tests her allegiance to a secret clan of werewolves, Elena must recon with who, and what, she is in this passionate, page-turning novel that begins the Women of the Otherworld series.
Elena Michaels is a werewolf. On certain nights, she takes off into the streets of the city naked and furred, savagely striking at the throats of her animal prey. Elena has done all she can to assimilate to the human world, but the man whose bite changed her existence forever continues to haunt her. When the elite pack of werewolves that initiated her into her new life is threatened, Michaels is thrown into a desperate war for survival that tests her allegiance to this secret clan, and forces her to reckon with who, and what, she is. In the spirit of Anne Rices Interview With a Vampire, Bitten is a powerful stay-up-all-night fiction debut and has been adapted into a TV series, to be aired on the Syfy channel in 2014.
