Publisher Comments:

In this age of instant communication and biotechnology, on this ever-smaller planet, what kinds of problems have we created for ourselves? How do we tackle them in a world where the accustomed methods used by nation-states may be reaching their natural limits? In High Noon, J. F. Rischard challenges us to take a new approach to the twenty most important and urgent global problems of the twenty-first century. Rischard finds their common thread: we don't have an effective way of dealing with the problems that our increasingly crowded, interconnected world creates. Our difficulties belong to the future, but our means of solving them belong to the past. Rischard proposes new vehicles for global problem-solving that are startling and persuasive. With its clear-eyed urgency and refreshing specificity, High Noon is an agenda-setting book that everyone who cares about the future must read.

Review:

"In High Noon, Rischard has supplied a much-needed call for careful thought and for action. We can now build on his extremely clear discussion of the major global issues facing the world today, of the linkages among them, and of opportunities to do something about them." Murray Gell-Mann

J.F. Rischard’s High Noon: 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve Them challenges the current habits and strategies of humans used while interacting with the global environment. High Noon was clearly written for a popular, adult audience and concisely summarizes the main points of complex global issues while retaining the reader’s attention. My major criticism of High Noon is that the suggestion of twenty years to solve a list of twenty complex issues may be overly ambitious. Rischard’s makes a convincing argument for the urgency of the issues which I agree with but twenty years to solve these issues from a global perspective is unrealistic. However overall, I enjoyed High Noon and Rischard’s ability to connect the scientific, social, and economic realms while retaining my attention. It is a gripping read which forces the audience to consider the implications they are placing on their world. I highly recommend High Noon to anyone interested in the future of the earth.
