Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In The Interpretation of Cultures, the most original anthropologist of his generation moved far beyond the traditional confines of his discipline to develop an important new concept of culture. This groundbreaking book, winner of the 1974 Sorokin Award of the American Sociological Association, helped define for an entire generation of anthropologists what their field is ultimately about.

Synopsis:

'One of the most articulate cultural anthropologists of this generation. Geertz has consistently attempted to clarify the meaning of 'culture' and to relate that concept to the actual behavior of individuals and groups.' -Elizabeth Colson, Contemporary Sociology

I am currently approaching my final days as a doctoral student in socio-cultural and linguistic anthropology. Few works have influenced or inspired my take on theory, fieldwork, and ethics as Geertz' book. The first chapter alone - his famous essay on 'Thick Description' - is a joy to read as both a student of anthropology and a lover of humanity.

Geertz was, of course, one of the most influential minds in late 20th century Anthropology; his nuanced investigations largely responsible for what we might now refer to as 'symbolic anthropology' - more broadly the study of semiotic mediations (rituals, beliefs, labor, play) as the loci of cultural reproduction and change. This book is his most coherent, thorough, and reasoned argument in this area, and I highly recommend it to persons at any stage of anthropological study. It is the work I personally turn to more often than any other.
