Joyce Carol Oates is a consummate writer- she's a writer's writer. She always seems to get it right whether she’s working her magic on a novel or keeping it concisely beautiful with her short stories. Heat and Other Stories contains some of best short works I have read.

It is tough enough to write a novel (wherein you have 300-500 pages or frighteningly- sometimes more) and develop interesting plot, consistent and compelling theme(s), distinct voice, well-laid structure and characters who have depth and quirks beyond that of flat cardboard cut-outs but to be able to do all that as masterfully as Oates does in this compendium is truly artful. Hauntingly sparse, subtle and tragically human, the stories in this collection will be bouncing around in your head for days or weeks afterwards until they settle into the corners of your mind for you to stumble upon these treasures and are once again reminded of Oates far-reaching insight and talent.

I highly recommend this collection for any serious reader or writer.
