About the Author

NICOLE MONES is the author of the New York Times Notable Book Lost in Translation and A Cup of Light. She started a textile business in China at the end of the Cultural Revolution and ran it for eighteen years, and she brings to her fiction writing an in-depth understanding of China and its culture. Mones is a frequent contributor to Gourmet magazine, which ran an excerpt of The Last Chinese Chef—marking the first time Gourmet has ever published fiction in its pages. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

A wonderful story of love and deception, self discovery and healing. But also a fascinating exploration into Chinese culture, from both the Cultural Revolution into modern times, including Chinese cuisine and herbal healing.

A love story, a voyage of discovery and great food writing all in one. It shed a whole new light on China and Chinese cooking for me. All within the framework of an excellent story.

A nicely woven story of the love developing between a chef and a writer, and love between the writer (a culinary journalist) and traditional Chinese food. The love story is light, if you're in love with a chef you'll recognize things. The food story is eye opening, about both the recipes as well as eating traditions in China. The descriptions of the food are very good - tastes, flavors, smells, form and shape are well caught, and links to books, calligraphy and history are well chosen. Recommended for food lovers.
