Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Susan Beth Pfeffers Life as We Knew It enthralled and devastated readers with its brutal but hopeful look at an apocalyptic event--an asteroid hitting the moon, setting off a tailspin of horrific climate changes. Now this harrowing companion novel examines the same events as they unfold in New York City, revealed through the eyes of seventeen-year-old Puerto Rican Alex Morales. When Alex's parents disappear in the aftermath of tidal waves, he must care for his two younger sisters, even as Manhattan becomes a deadly wasteland, and food and aid dwindle.

With haunting themes of family, faith, personal change, and courage, this powerful novel explores how a young man takes on unimaginable responsibilities.

The New York Times raved about this book, causing me to overcome my cynicism concerning young adult sci-fi. After reading it, I'm going back for more, picking up Pfeffer's companion to this book, Life As We Knew It. The novel presents us with a post-apocalyptic world in which a teen ager, torn from his family, must come to terms with a life in which unfairness and cruelty are the norm. That he does so by digging deep into reserves of humanity and compassion is a hopeful statement about humanity, in spite of humans and all of our foibles, that is as inspiring as any I've encountered in teen literature. A real page turner. Fast paced, fascinating, terrific characters, and some surprising twists. I read it in two sittings, the second only necessary because I was sad to see the pages dwindle down to the conclusion and spread the story out over two days.
