The New York Times raved about this book, causing me to overcome my cynicism concerning young adult sci-fi. After reading it, I'm going back for more, picking up Pfeffer's companion to this book, Life As We Knew It. The novel presents us with a post-apocalyptic world in which a teen ager, torn from his family, must come to terms with a life in which unfairness and cruelty are the norm. That he does so by digging deep into reserves of humanity and compassion is a hopeful statement about humanity, in spite of humans and all of our foibles, that is as inspiring as any I've encountered in teen literature. A real page turner. Fast paced, fascinating, terrific characters, and some surprising twists. I read it in two sittings, the second only necessary because I was sad to see the pages dwindle down to the conclusion and spread the story out over two days.
