Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Through the eyes of a distinctly non-athletic protagonist—a fat high school journalist named Mitch—veteran sports novelist Deuker reveals the surprising truth behind a mysterious football player named Angel.  When Angel shows up Lincoln High, he seems to have no past—or at least not one he is willing to discuss.  Though Mitch gets a glimpse of Angel's incredible talent off the field, Angel rarely allows himself to shine on the field.  Is he an undercover cop, wonders Mitch?  Or an ineligible player?  In pursuit of a killer story, Mitch decides to find out just who this player is and what he's done.  In the end, the truth surprises everyone.

Synopsis:

A mystery-thriller set against the backdrop of high school football and the criminal underworld. A reporters job is to find the missing pieces, and the high school journalist Mitch True is on the verge of uncovering those pieces and nailing his first real story. If only he can get the cornerback Angel Marichal to talk. Or Coach McNulty to explain why he never allows Angels obvious talent—his speed and strength—to shine on the field. What is Angels secret? And who profits from keeping the truth hidden? In a thriller both thought-provoking and suspenseful, the award-winning author Carl Deuker shows how investigating someone elses life can lead to very unexpected discoveries.

Synopsis:

Mick Johnson is determined not to make the same mistakes his father, a failed football hero, made. But after being tackled just short of the end zone in a big game, Mick begins using “gym candy,” or steroids. His performances become record-breaking, but the side effects are terrible: Mick suffers roid rage, depression, and body acne. Gym Candys subject matter is just as hard-hitting as its football scenes. Youll find yourself unable to look away as Mick goes down a road that even he knows is the wrong one to travel.

About the Author

Carl Deuker participated in several sports as a boy. He was good enough to make most teams, but not quite good enough to play much. He describes himself as a classic second-stringer. "I was too slow and too short for basketball; I was too small for football, a little too chicken to hang in there against the best fastballs. So, by my senior year the only sport I was still playing was golf." Carl still loves playing golf early on Sunday mornings at Jefferson Park in Seattle, the course on which Fred Couples learned to play. His handicap at present is 13. Combining his enthusiasm for both writing and athletics, Carl has created many exciting, award-winning novels for young adults. He currently lives in Seattle, Washington, with his wife and daughter.

The book payback time is an awesome book, about a teenager named Mitch True. Mitch is a talented yet distracted student who works for the Lincoln Light (the school paper). Mitch feels like after he graduates this dump called his school he was going to move to New York City and become an important writer for The New York Times. Compared to the other people at the school like the jocks and the football stars he is seen as nothing, but that's all about to change. Mitch is about to uncover a story that could change his life forever.
This book in particular is full of sports, action and mystery it is mostly a book for boys but girls can read it too. This book would be a great book from the ages 8 and up. in conclusion, anybody who likes football Mysteries and a bit of romance this is the book for you.

Payback Time is a great read for all teens. It is one-third a football story, with excellent descriptions of action packed games, one-third mystery with some excellent sleuthing from the protagonist, and one-third coming of age story with a protagonist who is much more interesting at the end of the book than he is in the beginning. Aspiring investigative journalist, Mitch, suspects something underhanded is going on with the new football team phenom, Angel, and he is determined to figure out what it is. Smart, perceptive classmate, Kimi, agrees to help. Mitch and Kimi get themselves in some scary situations when their determination overtakes their common sense. Mitch learns a lot about himself, his talent and the newspaper business as he works to solve the mystery of Angel. Many readers, not as sheltered or naive as Mitch, will solve the mystery before Mitch does, but the story is still enthralling and entertaining. The scenes of the football games are some of the best parts of the story. Author, Carl Deuker, makes the readers feel as if they are sitting in the bleachers with Mitch holding their breath until the last second of the fourth quarter. Readers will also cheer for Mitch who is working hard to persue his dreams and make his school, his family and the world notice his talents. Even teens who are not interested in sports or journalism will enjoy Payback Time.
