This book is a tactile journey through time, told in the voice of two narrators over a series of vignettes that attempt to flesh out every character in an extended family of eccentrics. Each small story builds on the next in a memoir that pays tribute to life and death and is woven into the history of Chile during a time of civil unrest. Allende's anecdotes employ a certain magical realism that had me reading and re-reading lines of delicious prose. She prefaces her masterpiece with a quote by Pablo Neruda: "How long does a man live, after all? Does he live a thousand days, or one only? A week, or several centuries? How long does a man spend dying? What does it mean to say 'for ever'?"
