Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Leaving behind a world on the brink of destruction, man came to the Red planet and found the Martians waiting, dreamlike. Seeking the promise of a new beginning, man brought with him his oldest fears and his deepest desires. Man conquered Mars — and in that instant, Mars conquered him.

The strange new world with its ancient, dying race and vast, red-gold deserts cast a spell on him, settled into his dreams, and changed him forever. Here are the captivating chronicles of man and Mars — the modern classic by the peerless Ray Bradbury.

Review:

"Bradbury is an authentic original." Time Magazine

Synopsis:

A classic work of twentieth-century literature whose extraordinary power and imagination remain undimmed by time's passage. In connected, chronological stories, Bradbury enthralls, delights and challenges readers with his vision and his heart — taking them to a strange, breathtaking world where humanity does not belong.

This book is about humans going to Mars. It tells of the first time that they arrived and were shot by the Martians living there, right through to the point where they decide to go back to Earth. It is a short story collection and can be a bit disjointed at times, as a number of the pieces were originally published in assorted magazines. The writing is good and smooth and most of the characters were likable, if rather superficial.

A fun light read that takes its self too seriously for the amount of material and depth (or lack of such) actually present. I can see that it could be viewed as a social commentary, but I felt that most of the characters were overly distant and there was little "grab" either emotional or logical to keep you interested in these fictional beings.

A rehash of the conquest of the American West by Anglo-Saxon settlers and the subsequent subjugation of the Native Americans, only this time it occurs on Mars. After reading the book, step away a moment and see it as a modern tragedy. A telling tale of the reality of the human animal.

This book will send shivers down your spine. It'll beg the question; If and when humans leave earth, will it be for adventure, or to escape? "The Martian Chronicles" is definitely a must read!
