If Carl Hiaasen set one of his novels on a residential stretch of boundary line between British Columbia and Washington, or if Richard Russo's characters had relatives in the Pacific Northwest, the result might be something like Jim Lynch's Border Songs. Continue »

Another Roadside Attraction

by Tom Robbins

Another Roadside Attraction Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

What if the Second Coming didn’t quite come off as advertised? What if “the Corpse” on display in that funky roadside zoo is really who they say it is—what does that portend for the future f western civilization? And what if a young clairvoyant named Amanda reestablishes the flea circus as popular entertainment and fertility worship as the principal religious form of our high-tech age? Another Roadside Attraction answers those questions and a lot more. It tell us, for example, what the sixties were truly all about, not by reporting on the psychedelic decade but by recreating it, from the inside out. In the process, this stunningly original seriocomic thriller is fully capable of simultaneously eating a literary hot dog and eroding the borders of the mind.

Review:

"Written with a style and humor that haven't been seen since Mark Twain . . . it is a prize."--Los Angeles Times.

I just finished this book, and I have to say Tom Robbins delivered another excellent read. It was a little less cohesive and scintillating than the other works by him I've read.
The story follows Amanda, a very interesting character, as well as a few other characters that are caught up in the world with her. The first half of the story is about Amanda's overly colorful world and the cast of characters in it (and one really huge hot dog). The second half deals with the question: What would you do if you had the corpse of a very powerful figure in your pantry?
It makes some very poignant statements about the world, that are just as true today as they were when he wrote the book.
