Publisher Comments:

How can an elderly recluse drown in a chair in her otherwise dry basement? Thats what John May and Arthur Bryant of Londons Peculiar Crimes Unit set out to discover in a city rife with shady real estate developers, racist threats, dodgy academicians, and someone dangerously obsessed with Egyptian mythology. Linking them all is an evil lurking in Londons vast and forgotten underground river system—a killer with the eerie ability to strike anywhere, anytime, without leaving a clue. Its a subterranean case of secrets, lies, and multiple murder that defies not only the law, but reason itself. Can Bryant and May bring a killer to the surface and stop the dark tide of murder before it pulls them under, too?

Chrisopher Fowler is the acclaimed author of fifteen previous novels, including the award-winning Full Dark House, and four other Peculiar Crimes Unit mysteries, White Corridor, The Water Room, Seventy-Seven Clocks, and Ten Second Staircase. He lives in London.

I was late in discovering Christopher Fowler's Briant and May series; all to the good, since i devoured them over a three month period and then went back and enjoyed them again at leisure. All are scholarly, all full of humor, wit, and the OSS knack for getting around authority and dispensing with Bumph.
The fascinating pentimento technique, as time period after time period is discussed or experienced during the course of happenings in contemporary London is a deft frame for everything from politics to love, cultural diversity, and the surprising things people can make into obsessions, not to mention skills.
The Water Room is only one of my favorites, but the plot---of the amazing chicanery of the Victorian rich, and the amazing skills of the pre-Raphaelite Painters, demonstrate that Fowler's mysteries are as surprising in their turns as the Roman sewers below today's London.....Readers who are faint of heart are advised: there are passages where you will laugh out loud, annoying your sleeping partner, and others where you will be advised to take the next chapter with the spiritual equivalent of a miner's canary.
