Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Weaving a tapestry of fact and fiction, Sara Donati's epic novel sweeps us into another time and place...and into the heart of a forbidden affair between an unconventional Englishwoman and an American frontiersman.

It is December of 1792. Elizabeth Middleton leaves her comfortable English estate to join her family in a remote New York mountain village. It is a place unlike any she has ever experienced. And she meets a man unlike any she has ever encountered — a white man dressed like a Native American, Nathaniel Bonner, known to the Mohawk people as Between-Two-Lives. Determined to provide schooling for all the children of the village, she soon finds herself locked in conflict with the local slave owners as well as her own family.

Interweaving the fate of the Mohawk Nation with the destiny of two lovers, Sara Donati's compelling novel creates a complex, profound, passionate portrait of an emerging America.

Elizabeth Middleton moves from England, the heart of civilization, to a tiny village in upstate New York. She believed this to be a brand-new chapter in her life, but had no idea what surprises and wishes would arrive in the form of Nathaniel Bonner. So much more than a love story, "Into the Wilderness" takes the reader along a fantastical journey. Intrigue, battles, and forbidden love race across the page and into imagination!

Robert Nokes, September 9, 2008 (view all comments by Robert Nokes)
In 1792 Elizabeth Middleton moves from England to New York. Not in the town, but in a village. This is where her father lives. Once there she finds a whole new world and life for her self. Elizabeth falls for this place in the wilderness and the people of the land. She finds happiness, heartache, and trouble. The conflicts between the settlers, the Mohawk People, and the slave owners weaves a epic tale, through this book and the ones that follow it. This book and the rest of the series is, in my opinion up there with the best ever written. Sara Donati, aka, Rossina Lippi, has written something that will stand the test of time, and become a classic. Give it a chance, you will not be disappointed.
