Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When LaVaughn hears that Jody is moving back into her housing project, she can hardly believe it. They were best friends when they were children, and now he's — well, gorgeous. But why doesn't he return her affection? In this eloquent sequel to Make Lemonade, author Virginia Euwer Wolff explores gender identity, class, religion, and love with her penetrating intelligence and gleaming literary style.

Synopsis:

When LaVaughn was little, the obstacles in her life didn't seem so bad. School was simple, boys were friends. Everything made sense. Now she's 15 and the obstacles aren't going away anymore, and the boy who's a miracle in her life acts as if he's in love with her. Only he's not in love with her.

Synopsis:

Following on from "Make Lemonade", this is a gripping second instalment, suitable for readers of 12 and over, in which LaVaughn and the others must deal with a new set of circumstances common to young adults everywhere.

This is a sequel to Wolff's Make Lemonade, but it easily stands alone. It's an interesting novel because it's told entirely in verse. This sounds strange at first, but I find that it really gives one an almost impressionistic feel for the emotions of the narrator. It's amazing how much emotion and action can be squeezed into one small poem. I've never read a novel like this that wasn't in first-person; I'm not sure if it could work. At times I felt like I just wanted to know MORE than what the narrator was telling me, though. The plot is about a young woman in the inner city struggling to live up to her potential, and at the same time experiencing all the usual highschool stuff, like falling in love and growing apart from her friends.
