Black Rubber Dress: A Sam Jones Novelby Lauren Henderson
Imagine Nancy Drew all grown up and with a taste for vodka and unsuitable men not to mention a PVC dress and a mouth like a sailor and you'll have some idea of what to expect from Lauren Henderson's Black Rubber Dress. Metal sculptor and amateur sleuth Sam Jones is sexy, hip, wickedly funny, and delightfully naughty. She's the bad girl we all wish we could be.
Synopses & Reviews
Sexy, savvy sculptor-turned-sleuth Sam Jones attracts trouble like she does men. When her sculpture Thing III is unveiled at a swank reception in the atrium of a London bank, a dead body crashes the party. From there, events take a distinctly dangerous turn. Our rubber-clad heroine hardly suspects that in a few days she'll be embroiled in a hot affair with a BMW-driving, Kensington-dwelling stockbroker — the shame of it!
Forced to hang out with a pair of spoiled, anorexic rich girls and their unsavory entourage of "friends" as she unravels the facts behind the murder, Sam finds herself unwillingly pulled into a twisted world of drugs, blackmail, and trust funds — one that seems to spell disaster for high society's darlings. By the end of the week even the usually tough-as-nails Sam is running scared. She needs to get to the bottom of it all — before she turns up dead herself.
From Our Staff:
Black Rubber Dress is a little bit crime drama, a little bit "chick lit," and a whole lot of British humor. Lauren Henderson's writing is reminiscent of Nick Hornby if Hornby got a sex change and started writing mysteries. The main character, Sam Jones, is an artist with horrid taste in men and a way of being at the wrong place at the right time. This novel is very funny, and a great choice for those who want a more cheeky chick lit.
"Sam's wonderfully sardonic narrative serves as satiric commentary, especially as she and said hunk have their way with each other....A topnotch first novel." Library Journal
"The funkiest detective on the block." The Daily Mail
"We've always had the reprobate hero: this is the female counterpart who might eat him for breakfast." Mail on Sunday
"Positively effervescent whodunit featuring streetwise sculptress Sam Jones... Henderson storms through her novel with wit and assurance. British crime writing has a new star." Literary Review
"Henderson is the dominatrix of the British crime scene. More please." Time Out
