Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

His plan was to stay in Iowa, maybe get a job counting ducks, or do a little farming. But events conspired to fling Carter Niemeyer westward and straight into the jaws of wolves. From his early years wrangling ornery federal trappers, eagles and grizzlies, to winning a skinning contest that paved the way for wolf reintroduction in the Northern Rockies, Carter Niemeyer reveals the wild and bumpy ride that turned a trapper — a killer $#151; into a champion of wolves.

Review:

"In this colorful memoir, Niemeyer explores a life shaped by wolves, suspicious ranchers, intrepid trappers, other extraordinary characters, and convoluted politics. 'Wolves had a way of working their way into my life,' Niemeyer writes, 'like a worm through an apple. They are just animals, of course, but they have a way of making people nuts, and for that matter, attracting nutty people.' A government expert who reintroduced endangered gray wolves to the West, Niemeyer works day and night to become a revered wildlife expert and develop a real understanding of the often unjustly maligned wolf. Among the book's many engaging anecdotes are stories about grinding up prairie dogs for bait, flea treatments for trappers, and capturing a dart-gunned grizzly. Niemeyer's cogent tale is full of empathy, and his adventures and the mind-boggling challenges he faces will rivet readers." Publishers Weekly Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

A look at the evolution and transformation of Carter Niemeyer. He was at ground zero for most of the significant mileposts in wolf recovery in the western U.S. in the 80s, 90s, and 00s, and gives his firsthand account of those events. His easy-to-read narrative outlines his personal and professional "growth" and he tells it like he sees it regarding wolf management; after all this is a memoir. Anyone with even a passing interest in wolf-related topics, and the ever present controversy that seems to envelop it, you will be told the tale of one of the wolf world's important players.
