Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Fully updated for the twenty-first century, The New First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy lists essential facts in twenty-one subject areas to promote successful learning in kids.

Child education expert E. D. Hirsch Jr. cuts through the wealth of information available today to highlight terms that a child should be familiar with by the end of sixth grade. With nearly 3,000 concise definitions and including 250 new entries (like Harry Potter, centaurs, northern lights, and World Series), this popular sourcebook makes it easy for children to become literate in mythology, literature, U.S. history, science and technology, and more.

Book News Annotation:

Hirsch's (U. of Virginia) text is a revised edition of the 1996 publication, A First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy. Based on input from several hundred teachers and parents across the nation, the text outlines the knowledge that American children should know by the end of sixth grade. The dictionary features some 3,000 entries organized into 21 thematic sections on subjects such as fine arts, mathematics, world geography, world history, science and technology, proverbs, and idioms, and is illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, and diagrams. Updated throughout and now including 250 new entries, it will be a useful resource for students, their families, and teachers.
