An Inconvenient Truth By: Al Gore

Al Gore’s, An Inconvenient Truth, encompasses our world in a new light. Gore creates a great flow throughout the reading. He mixes his personal life experiences and how they have been affected by these changes in our earth. Gore takes you on a journey from him at a young age to a working politician and how he grew to become a walking protest for such an important cause. The book is full of vivid images that show examples of this devastating phenomenon that has taken over our planet: Global Warming. Through the book, Gore proves,” Many people are convinced, mistakenly, that the Earth is so big, human beings can’t do serious damage to it” (18). Not only does he prove this statement wrong, but he approaches this crisis with a touch of hope and optimism for his readers. Of course, the book would start off with a brief history and explanation of global warming but it also gives us a glimpse at a clear picture of how we as people have changed the earth’s composition.
Secondly, Gore bluntly states the evidence of how we have affected earth in a dangerous way in every descriptive detail and illustration. He starts off with a depiction of glaciers all over the world to the rise of heat waves which have then created more frequent, bigger hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes, and damaging weather. He speaks of these extreme events that have happened, with a sense of passion and disgust, for example Hurricane Katrina. “ There are no words to describe it. One of America’s greatest cities had been literally drowned”(68-70). Gore happens to shed truth into the light. He mentions the effects and changes for us humans, but also wildlife, plant life, and landforms here on earth. The truth of trashing our planet to animal extinction to losing landforms to the thought of not having freshwater, makes you question the morals of our world. We have lived so contently off this still unknown land that we have yet to realize the damages we have caused. Gore leaves you with an inconvenient truth that shocks you and then makes you want to do something about it. It’s like sublimation of our glaciers: ice to water fluid and for us it’s ignorance to knowledge. An Inconvenient Truth, is a fantastic read that takes you on a empowering ride of learning about this havoc we have caused and what we can do about as a people and individually. The last sentence Gore leaves you with, ‘It is our only home. And we must take care of it”(180). This only leaves you with a thought, without Earth, where would we be. It’s one of the most important things we should be worried about, but it is a lost truth that only Al Gore has happened to remind us about with his groundbreaking book.
