My first foray into Vollmann and I've never looked back. Since then I've purchased a good number of his books. Not an easy read by any means, but if you persevere, you will be rewarded. Mixes the literary past with the actual present. He attempts and succeeds with melding Norse/ Icelandicmythology with historical and sociological research into an engaging, and at times disturbing, story. He almost always includes a bibliography, which he does here, to show where his research came from. Quite simply an amazing undertaking and a spectacular novel.
