Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This classic tale of the famous Mallard ducks of Boston. Awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1941, Make Way for Ducklings has been described as "one of the merriest picture books ever" (The New York Times). Ideal for reading aloud, this book deserves a place of honor on every child's bookshelf.

Synopsis:

A pair of ducks proudly return to their home in the Boston Public Garden withtheir eight offspring.

I am really excited to have this beautiful book to share with other mothers and children, now in Spanish. My mother first gave me "Make Way for Ducklings" (in English) years ago. When she said her fourth-grade students loved it, I thought it was probably way too old for my two-year-old, but no! Every day he insisted that this was the book he wanted to hear (and look at) over and over again. My next child was the same, and a few years later we acquired a mama mallard with six ducklings and exactly the same fiercely maternal attitude as the mother duck in the story: "Make way: my kids are coming through!" All the Muscovy ducks and even the biggest, toughest roosters in our poultry yard waited in line for her babies to be finished at the water trough, so I know this book is based on true mallard traits (and believe it is, as claimed, a true story).

The book is very well written, and the soft pencil drawings, realistic and detailed, are really lovely. I don't recall whether the medal on the front cover represents the Newberry or the Caldecott Award (one is for best story, the other for best illustrations), but in my judgment, the book deserves both. I certainly recommend it for children of a broad range of ages.
