Zephyr, Alabama, is an idyllic hometown for eleven-year-old Cory Mackenson — a place where monsters swim the river deep and friends are forever. Then, one cold spring morning, Cory and his father witness a car plunge into a lake — and a desperate rescue attempt brings his father face-to-face with a terrible vision of death that will haunt him forever.

As Cory struggles to understand his father's pain, his eyes are slowly opened to the forces of good and evil that are manifested in Zephyr. One of my favorite stories of all time by paperback horror master Robert R Mccammon, and one that I have re-read each year since first discovering this great adventure. The story is narrarated by 12 year old Cory Mackenson who makes up stories to entertain & amaze his friends in his tiny town of Zephyr. Cory crosses paths with many interesting characters including a man-eating alligator, a clairvoyant voodoo woman, KKK bomb throwers, a fraudulent evangelists, homicidal bootleggers, an eccentric millionaire who strolls around town buck naked, a magical white stag, a ghost car, a meteor, a magic bicycle, an O.K. Corral-style shootout at the Trailways bus station and a pair of renegade Nazis in hiding and somehow Mccammon is able to masterfully wrap it all up into a believable coming-of-age story that leaves you wanting more.
It's one of those books you want to read and pass on to a friend so you can share the experience with them. I've only ever done that with a few very special books. Boy's Life is one that I've shared many, many times.

I love this book! I've read almost all of McCammon's books and this is my favourite. I've read it at least three times. In fact, I love it well enough to keep buying copies to give away to potential new readers...

one of the most incredible books out there about coming-of-age. cory is a captivating character, as are his conjurings and surroundings. the author breathes believable life into a young man's realities and fantasies. the richness of the supporting cast makes you walk away believing in ghosts and fairies.
