Of Two Minds: The Growing Disorder in American Psychiatry
Synopses & Reviews
Book News Annotation:
Lurhmann (anthropology, U. of California, San Diego) presents an ethnographer's view on psychiatry, based on interviews with patients and doctors, as well as investigative fieldwork in residency programs and psychiatric hospitals. She describes how psychiatrists are trained, how they develop their approaches to patients, and how the ambiguities in the field affect both its practitioners and their patients. She also addresses current controversies, especially concerning the role of mood-altering drugs.
