About the Author

Brenda Fowler was born in Davenport, Iowa. She studied international relations and journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and then worked as a news assistant at The New York Times. Between 1989 and 1992 she lived in Vienna and traveled throughout Eastern Europe covering for the Times the demise of socialism in Czechoslovakia and Albania and the breakup of Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. In 1992 she moved to Chicago to study humanities at the University of Chicago. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, The Times of London, and other publications. She lives in Chicago.
