Christine from Buell Oregon, October 14, 2014 (view all comments by Christine from Buell Oregon)
1919 was a pivotal year in race relations in the US. African American soldiers returning from war were trained, proud, and confident. Yet they came back to segregation and discrimination. William M. Tuttle, Jr., studies the Chicago race riots of the summer of 1919, explaining the historical and social context that allowed violence to flare. The riot left 58 dead, and hundreds wounded or homeless. Tuttle's study is a fascinating look at the early 20th century development of northern urban segregation and racial divisions. Want to get a sense of modern race relations? This book gives essential background.
