Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Perfect for a new generation of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day readers, this charming story about a grumpy cat gently shows how far a little sharing can go.

Bernice is having a truly rotten time at her friend's birthday party. First, everyone else gets a piece of cake with a frosting rose. But not Bernice. Then, everyone else gets strawberry-melon soda. Bernice gets the prune-grapefruit juice. And it's warm. The last straw is the one lousy (squished) candy she gets from the piñata. So when the balloons arrive, Bernice knows just what she has to do: grab them all. And then, poor cross Bernice gets carried up, up, and away. Luckily, she figures out just how to make her way back down to the party...and she brightens lots of other animals' days on her way.

Hannah Harrisons gorgeous animal paintings come alive in her second picture book. Her “exceptionally polished” debut, Extraordinary Jane, received starred reviews from Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, and  School Library Journal.

Synopsis:

Viorst's classic tale of a little boy who must accept the reality that "some days are like that," when everything he does goes awry, is one of her most popular works. "The clever text shines."--"School Library Journal," starred review. ALA Notable Children's Book. Full color.

About the Author

Judith Viorst has been writing for the more than ten years that she has been married, with a lot of helpful encouragement from her husband and three sons. She loves children's books and tries to write books that her own children will like--and in which they will sometimes recognize themselves. Her husband is also a free-lance writer, and he works at home as she does. As one of their children once explained, "My father is a typewriter, and I think my mother is too." One of the earlier books she produced is The Tenth Good Thing About Barney.

One of my favorite children's books, though I am too old to have encountered it aqs a child.. I read this one to my child and to innumerable other children in schools, residential treatment programs, day care, at home and in libraries, and it never ceases to put a wry smile on my face, especially when I'm having a frustrating day myself. "Alexander and the Terrible...Day" didactic in a very gentle ironic voice; some days *are* just like that, even in the mythic "Australia" where Alexander imagines he should be able to escape the flat tires and spilled ink and groceries of everyday life. When I am tired of cloying New Age sweetness, on the one hand, and despair on the other, I can pull out the tale of the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day and put it all in perspective. Thank you Judith Viorst for this enduring gem.

Thought this was a great book when I was younger; in elementary school, we had a day where 2 of the classes got together to recite lines in front of parents...we had to act it out and all! I am older now, but I just had a conversation about the book with my boyfriend. He used to love this book when he was younger because he thought the book was written about him since his name is Alex. He says he used to read it every time he experienced a bad day.
