Two Women

Elske, a girl with no future, until her grandmother's sacrifice saves her from certain death.

Beriel, an imperious princess, determined to claim the kingdom that is her birthright.

Fate brings them together, both exiles, one servant to the other. To Beriel, the mistress, Elske offers steadfast loyalty and courage — hard to come by in her dangerous quest to regain the throne she has been denied by treachery. To Elske, the handmaiden, Beriel's proud example provides a perhaps even more precious gift — the strength to find her true self.

Synopsis:

In this dramatic conclusion to the Kingdom sequence, Elske is fleeing to the civilized north to escape certain death in her homeland. She then finds herself a handmaiden to Beriel, another exile, and rightful heir to the throne of the Kingdom. Elske discovers her own strength as she joins Beriel in her fight to claim her birthright.

Elske was a girl among the Wolfers, where woman were viewed as inferior. When she escapes she is taken in by a kind family who help her find a job as a lady's maid. She goes to work for Beriel, a princess who is determined to overthrow her brother who has taken a throne she views as hers. Elske is thrown into fierce politics where she expected to play spy, friend and protector.

This book took me forever to read. I think it is because of the slow moving plot. I did enjoy it though. Elske is a very interesting character and I liked the writing. It is slow, graceful and elegant, matching the girl's stories perfectly.
