Review:

"[A] well-intentioned...if rather listless alphabet book....A competent though less than compelling tribute." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"Glasser's cheerful watercolor-and-ink illustrations are the greatest strength of this ambitious project.....Though the concept and busy design require some extra effort, this well-meant exploration of our history and heritage packs a huge amount of information between its covers." Kirkus Reviews

Synopsis:

More than an alphabet book, this is a primer of American history, a book for families to pore over and discuss, and a celebration of American diversity, faith, and tenacity. Each letter of the alphabet stands for an idea ("S is for Suffrage, " "T is for Tolerance") or for an historical figure ("J is for Jefferson, " "K is for King"). Each idea is illustrated in words, through quotations from historical sources; and in pictures, through exuberant and detailed drawings by renowned illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser.

All of Mrs. Cheney's net proceeds from America go to the American Red Cross and to projects that foster appreciation of American history. A portion of Simon & Schuster's profits go to First Book, an organization that promotes childhood literacy in America.
