Book News Annotation:

A biography of the great 20th century composer whose Hungarian themes and moving lyricism influenced a generation of classical musicians. Chalmers traces Bartok's development as a composer from his youth in the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the final uncompleted Third Piano Concerto written in the US in 1945. Between the beginning and end is the life of a genius whose politics brought him into conflict with the Fascist Hungarian government and Hitler, finally forcing him to emigrate to the US and leave behind both his family and country but never their music. Includes photographs.

Synopsis:

Born into the heart of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bela Bartok (1881 — 1945) became a fervent nationalist, setting off with his friend Zoltan Kodaly to record their native folk music; these sounds and experiences were a formative influence on his compositions. Bartok's distaste for authoritarian rule brought him into conflict with both the Hungarian government and Adolf Hitler's Germany, and in 1940 he emigrated to the USA. Despite his disillusionment and poor health he continued to compose outstanding works there, never compromising his ideals nor losing his innocence.

Synopsis:

This biography of Bela Bartok includes a contextual study of his work. This illustrated book shows the links between his life, his music and the turbulence of two world wars. Bartok is the composer of "Concerto for Orchestra" and on his deathbed, he worked on his "Third Piano Concerto".

Description:

Includes bibliographical references (p. 225-227), discography (p. 227-231), and index.
