Publisher Comments:

All women have it, but may never have thought about it-it’s the one week of the month when you feel great about yourself, more attractive, focused, and receptive to others. Your hair shines; your skin glows. But why does this happen? And why do we often feel so out of balance the rest of the month?Leading gynecologist Dr. Rebecca Booth created the Venus Week metaphor to help her patients better understand what influences the constant physical, emotional, and sexual changes they feel. Now, in The Venus Week, she reveals the surprising ways you can manage your body’s weekly hormonal shifts to your best advantage, no matter what your age or stage in life. You’ll discover how to: Find your Venus Week and maximize its positive effects Improve your chances of achieving-or avoiding-pregnancy Increase your energy and boost your libido Lessen the effects of the Minerva Phase: acne, irritability, weight gain and mood swings Manage common “Venus Interrupters” like stress, insulin resistance, and health conditions Ease the changes of perimenopause and menopause Knowing the secret of The Venus Week can help you feel less at the mercy of your hormones and more in control. You’ll learn how these variations affect your body, your relationships, and your life in general, from your early twenties through menopause and beyond. Combining cutting-edge medical information with a diet, beauty, and lifestyle plan, The Venus Week helps you channel that look-good, feel-good phenomenon and make it work for you-not only during those few days, but all month long.

Review:

"An OB/GYN with more than 20 years on the job, Booth writes sympathetically and knowledgeably about the female struggle for self-knowledge: despite an 'almost innate sense,' many women 'have little concrete information about why their bodies work.' Using simple, clutter-free metaphors to break down the 'dance' of the female cycle, Booth accounts for the hormones that rule the body as it seeks and prepares for conception. Her central metaphor, the Venus Week, is the pre-ovulatory stage 'when estrogen-the feel-good hormone-is at its height,' offering renewed ease with oneself, greater confidence and higher energy levels. Booth's Venus Week Plan explains how to make the most of this week, encompassing a sensible diet and exercise plan, as well as more compelling advice for unearthing your lost Venus Week and taking care with 'hormonal power': 'Nature's priorities may not always match what is best for us as individuals, as lovers, and as careful and thoughtful committed partners.' Booth also looks at the cycle from adolescence through menopause, offering advice for each age group. Though text-heavy and occasionally technical, it's refreshing to find a self-help in which 'the secret' refers to knowledge; Booth's belief in its power to overcome suffering is admirable and infectious. Any woman who feels her body is beyond her understanding should find Booth's first book eye-opening and empowering." Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

It's rare that a book piques my interest like this one. I picked it up to skim and found myself unable to put it down. I have re-read many of the chapters and refer back to them often.
Dr. Booth has taken the commonly dreaded monthly cycle and not only de-mystified it, but actually has offered a medically sound way to understand it, and embrace it - and let me tell you, that is quite a feat!
Her medical information is understandable and her tips to maximize Venus are actually doable. I love that!
A must-have for every woman, regardless of age, and then men who love them!

This is a remarkable book in every way. In the first place, eventhough I am a man, the title piqued my curiosity. What is the "powerful secret" women carry with regard to their cycles? I've known that women hold secrets that men cannot access. Perhaps I could peak behind the curtain and learn something of these secrets.

To my surprise, the book was fascinating and deeply enlightening. Written in a very accessible style, yet backed with substantial research and academic support, The Venus Week delivered well beyond my expectations. It describes, in positive terms, what I had mostly held to be one of the "negatives" that women have to deal with -- their hormones.

It was as if Dr. Booth was sitting across the table from me making sense of things I had observed, with confusion and some consternation, over many years of trying to "get" women. She was helping me to understand my wife: grasp the hormonal seas that she navigates each month, marvel at her ability to balance all that is happening inside her, and understand ways that I can contribute to her health (and sanity).

Though there is much that I'm sure I have missed in the book, The Venus Week has given me a whole new appreciation for the marvellous strength and beauty of women. I would recommend it to every man who wants to understand the women in his life; not only from a biological perspective, but a psychological and, in some ways spritual, as well.
