Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Drawing from diverse personages — Goethe to Churchill to Woody Allen — Robert Byrne has mined a collection of wit and wisdom that deserves a special place on every humor lover's bookshelf. These unique, witty, and outrageous quotations, previously published in four separate volumes, are now gathered together in a seemingly limitless trove of pithy and often irreverent one-liners, retorts, put-downs, jokes, and last words that cover every conceivable subject and will appeal to every taste. Highlights include: andlt;BRandgt; "Start every day with a smile and get it over with." — W. C. Fields andlt;BRandgt; "Men read maps better than women because only men understand that an inch can equal a hundred miles." — Roseanne Barr andlt;BRandgt; "Happiness is having a large loving family in another city." — George Burns

Synopsis:

Unlike most compilation of quotations, The 2,548 Best Things Anybody Ever Said is a book to be read and savored, a fanciful tour that captures the words of great wits, both well-known and anonymous, commenting on the passing scene, on families, philosophy, films, and almost every other topic under the sun. Byrne's selections ranges from the quick-witted remarks of literary legends like Flaubert and Goethe to pithy, pungent quips from David Letterman and Bill Maher, to on-target wisecracks from politicians, playwrights, and other pundits. No attempt has been made to include every major author, authority, and humorist, and most of the old chestnuts have been winnowed out to make room for entries that will surprise, delight, and occasionally enlighten readers. Here's just a taste of the treats Byrne serves up:
