Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Jodi Picoult, bestselling author of My Sister's Keeper and The Tenth Circle, pens her most riveting book yet, with a startling and poignant story about the devastating aftermath of a small-town tragedy.

Sterling is an ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens--until the day its complacency is shattered by an act of violence. Josie Cormier, the daughter of the judge sitting on the case, should be the state's best witness, but she can't remember what happened before her very own eyes--or can she? As the trial progresses, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show--destroying the closest of friendships and families. Nineteen Minutes asks what it means to be different in our society, who has the right to judge someone else, and whether anyone is ever really who they seem to be.

It is a beautifully written story that hits close to home for just about anybody. It hurt to read the first couple of chapters as I could see the story that was unfolding. I almost had to stop reading it. And even as I kept reading, it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. She details all of the events leading up to the main event and I just wanted to grab the characters and shake them to stop their actions. Wonderful book.

I loved this book, I am very interested in what goes on in the heads of students who commit a school shooting. I'm trying to understand what they went through that brought them to that point, and having been beat up and made fun of all my life, I understand what makes you cross that line, this book does that. It delves deep into so many different personas, but it doesn't confuse you or become too full of information. All in all it is an excellent book, one which everyone should read, I bought for my grandma for Christmas, who is a teacher, and she can't put it down!!
