I've looked for a good pruning guide for years, and now I can say I've found it! This book offers excellent overviews of the fundamentals of pruning and fantastic details on how to prune specific plants at different stages of their life cycle, from initial training of new plants to tackling established (and neglected, for us too-busy people) plants. In DK publisher fashion the illustrations and visuals are superb.

I have lots of fruit trees and several grape vines, so my search for a good pruning guide has leaned towards information on edibles. For instance, I've never found a good explanation on how to handle fig trees. They fruit differently than all other fruit trees and I finally know the special approach they need, which is clearly explained.

For those of you who have mostly ornamentals, you'll also find this book packed with good information. It's the best detail I've ever seen regarding pruning a wide range of plants, including roses. The section on roses explains the different methods based on the type of rose you are growing. Too often rose pruning guides offer one approach, for the modern bush rose. The dictionary approach to ornamental shrubs, trees and climbing plants makes accessing information easily accessible. Some of these entries were informative but without illustrations, so harder to visualize steps to take; nevertheless the information was still quite helpful.

In sum, I'm most excited about the information on edibles, and am thrilled to now have a go-to book to help me be a fruitful urban gardener.
