Publisher Comments:

The latest addition to our best-selling Encyclopedia of Art series (more than 300,000 copies sold!) focuses on the wonderful textures of crochet. All the essential tools and techniques are clearly explained in more than 400 diagrams and photographs, making it an invaluable guide for both beginners and the more experienced crafters. Readers will discover new twists on the basics, and learn how to create complex-looking stitches, openwork and lace, multicolored patterns, shaped motifs, Afghan squares, and much more. A 16-page gallery in the back of the book features a wide range of crochet items from designers around the world, a perfect section to inspire creativity.

This is among the best crochet guides I've read and used. The organization of the material makes sense, the coverage of the various types of crochet is comprehensive enough, but what really makes this text stand out is the clear illustrations and pictures - of stitches and of techniques. The images are in color as are many of the illustrations, which can be very helpful when you are trying to decipher which strand of yarn goes where, etc. There are several projects included in Chapter 3 which are varied enough and customizable enough to interest many readers. The book is not spiralbound but it does lay flat nicely. The size makes it a bit big to carry around but I wouldn't trade the lovely illustrations for a smaller size text. Finally, the only criticism I have is Ch. 4 - "The Gallery" - my pet peeve is being shown projects but not being given the patterns. Overall, I would rate this book 9.5 out of 10.
