Publisher Comments:

There are plenty of books and DVDs that show women how to exercise with their baby to get back in shape. But what about the poor neglected dad? The truth is, "raising" one's children comes naturally to fathers, and this book provides new dads with a spontaneous, healthy, and fun way to engage with their babies and young children. With funky, retro-cool, full-color illustrations, Baby Barbells not only shows men how to work their biceps and quads, but more importantly provides amusing yet poignant advice on bonding with baby and becoming a great dad.

With its soft, subtle humor and meaningful guidance, Baby Barbells combines parenting, fitness, and health into a playful series of exercises--all in a contemporary, appealing package.

Fitness and Fathering

BABY BARBELLS, a joint hard book effort by writer Joshua Levitt and illustrator Matt Stevens, is one of the most inclusive guides on how to stay fit not only physically but also mentally and spiritually for new fathers that is available on the market today. Levitt takes an infectiously lighthearted approach to his subject matter and his writing is not only pitch perfect as far as content is concern, but warmly supportive for fathers who are either stay at home dads or just new to the game of family life.

The book subtly outlines exercises that can be done using the baby as the resistive weight or focal point for doing various exercises and these very fine suggestions of how to bring your gym into the nursery are sound and extremely well illustrated by Stevens: it would be impossible not to be able to follow these thoughtful and workable exercises. That, to the browsing shopper, might seem to be the point of this book. But instead that is only a part of the content. The divisions in this book address how husbands/fathers can take over the chores of baby tending, relieving the mother for well deserved timeout. But at the same time the book also emphasizes such aspects of 'new family practice' as tending to the spouse, father-type bonding with baby, nutrition, coordinating work life with family time, plying with baby in many formats, being a stern while loving parent in taming fussy babies, etc. Yes, the author does give solid instruction in how to tend to each body part (biceps, chest, calves, abdominals, lower back, triceps, etc) including cardiovascular and complete fitness as gleaned from hikes, balance training, lifting, calisthenics while at the same time he offers sage advice about sleep, relationships as a family and bonding.

All of this information is offered in such a warm and positive way that it should become not only a fitness manual for new fathers, but also a psychological resource for the events that change lives with the entry of a new little one!
