Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Fifteen-year-old Virginia Shreves has a larger-than-average body and a plus-size inferiority complex, especially when she compares herself to her slim, brilliant, picture-perfect family. But that's before a shocking phone call — and a horrifying allegation — about her rugby-star brother changes everything. With irreverent humor and surprising gravity, Carolyn Mackler creates an endearingly blunt heroine who speaks to every teen who struggles with family expectations, and proves that the most impressive achievement is to be true to yourself.

Review:

"A 'chubby' New York City teen faces pressures from her family to get thin, and her brother is suspended from college on charges of date rape. 'The heroine's transformation into someone who finds her own style and speaks her own mind is believable — and worthy of applause,' according to PW. Ages 14-up. (July)" Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

"Mackler has created in Virginia such a believable, funny-voiced, deeply pained character that readers will be rooting for her every step of the way, and cheering through their tears at her new-found strength and dignity in asserting herself against her well-meaning but overbearing family." Children's Literature

Review:

"[T]his novel is a required purchase for public library young adult collections. The occasional use of strong language and a few mild sexual allusions are appropriate and well done." VOYA

Review:

"Funny, touching, and very real, Mackler depicts both the trials and triumphs of adolescence when, like Virginia,we search for, and hopefully find, ourselves." KLIATT

Review:

"Virginia's story will interest readers who are looking for one more book with teen angst, a bit of romance, and a kid who is a bit like them or their friends." School Library Journal

Review:

"An easy read with substance and spirit." Kirkus Reviews

Synopsis:

Fifteen-year-old Virginia Shreves is sure that she's the weakest link in her high-powered family until her handsome, athletic, star-student brother shockingly falls from grace. Young Adult.

From a parents perspective-after reviewing the book my daughter brought home, I decided not to let her read it. I found graphic sexual content and profane language in parts of the book. I was shocked to find out this book was in her school library. I have contacted the school board and started the review process to remove this book and others like it from the school libraries. The content of this book is for more mature, young adult, readers. I do not find it is appropriate for teens.
