A patient Gram and her spirited grandson follow the cycle of the seasons as they savor the shared joy of growing things.

Gram and Joe are great friends, and they love to spend time together, taking care of the vegetable patch-with a little help from nature, of course. But it takes a lot of patience. Theres digging time, planting time, weeding time, watering time, even thinking time. Meanwhile, the seasons change, and Gram does things her way, while Joe does things his way. Come harvest time, they each will find wondrous surprises, thanks to the benevolence of the good brown earth.

About the Author

Kathy Henderson has written several award-winning books, most recently THE STORM, which she also illustrated, and THE BABY DANCES. Of AND THE GOOD BROWN EARTH, she says, "Isnt it amazing what can happen when you just put a seed in the earth? This story just came springing up out of the ground like the plants in our family vegetable plot, and the seed it took was my youngest child showing me how to do things her way." As well as writing and illustrating, Kathy Henderson works as an artist and printmaker. She has a strong interest in music and sound and has written a number of programs for radio. She lives in North London and has three children.

This is a great book to illustrate many things. Young Joe and Gram have a great relationship and spend a lot of time together. They take care of the vegetable patch which is also a learning experience for young Joe. This story goes from fall to fall and explains all that the good brown earth does throughout the seasons. The book shows a good family relationship, seasons and growing and learning about the earth. There are many tasks that are to be completed at each season and it shows Gram and Joe taking place in each of these. The book shows patience and waiting as they wait for nature to run its course in the vegetable patch. This book could be a useful tool for many situations. A good read for young children, especially when teaching them about the seasons.
