A Candlewick Press exclusive! A book and film DVD gift set

As Leon fishes out on the bayou one night, the moon goes dark and he is drawn into a mysterious and wonderful adventure, one that takes him all the way to the moon — and inside it. A jar of lightning bugs, a glorious carousel, a two-headed monster, and the intriguing Moongirl herself all play a part in this stunning picture book, based on the award-winning animated short film by celebrated animation director Henry Selick and packaged with a DVD of the complete film. Luminous artwork created for the storybook by Peter Chan (storyboard artist for the Harry Potter films) and Courtney Booker (digital storyboard artist for FINDING NEMO) transports readers to a mythical moonscape full of breathtaking possibilities.

Kids Literati, March 5, 2007 (view all comments by Kids Literati)
Moongirl is a magnificent picture book and DVD gift set created by Henry Selick, Peter Chan, and Courtney Booker. The book is based on the award-winning short film by the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. The film includes a soundtrack created by They Might Be Giants.

Moongirl is really the story of Leon, who has an incredible lunar adventure that begins with him night-fishing on the bayou under the light of the moon. When the moon goes dark, Leon is pulled upward into the night sky by a glowing fish made of stars. The starry fish propels Leon to crash into the center of the moon where he meets Moongirl, discovers a magical carousel at the center of the moon and saves the moon from the gargaloon, the mischievous dark monster on the moon.

This is a magical, mesmerizing story which is delightful and enjoyable as both a book and film. Each presentation of the story highlights different aspects of the story and make a marvelous gift for any kid. A modern lunar fairytale for all ages.
