Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Open the covers of this extraordinarily inventive, interactive book to find that the cats inside are ready to play — in very surprising ways.

There they are, purring under a blanket. But not for long. Three sprightly cats named Tiny, Moonpie, and Andre are eager to involve you in their games, whether it's tossing a ball of yarn (oof), lifting flaps to find them in boxes (comfy), or getting caught in a pillow fight (biff). As their antics get wilder still, they'll need a kind soul to blow on the page to dry them off. With an irresistible story that directly engages the reader, this book's clever design and bright, gestural illustrations make for cat-tastic lift-the-flap fun.

Review:

"Interactive pages colored with ink, paint and photo collage invite readers to revel in what felines already know: that the mere existence of cats is cause for festivity. Schwarz (The Adventures of a Nose) sets a jokester mood from the get-go, from the partial jacket, which lets cats peep out at readers, to text that begins on endpapers ('The cats aren't on this page'). Flaps, the first of them multi-layered and cat-shaped, and die-cut pages capture the essence of play. The 'very friendly' Tiny, Moonpie and Andr, each a different primary color, entice the audience with dialogue balloons: 'Hello. Who are you?... Are you nice?... You look nice.' The felines plunge with wild abandon into a tableau of sumptuous yarn and later demand release from exotically decorated lift-the-flap boxes. Elsewhere, flaps unveil a pillow fight in progress, as well as a sutured stuffed dog named Biff, and a mishap results in a 'tidal wave' of rogue fish, bewildered foils to their cat counterparts. The whirlwind of pure kinetic energy ensures that readers are wholly part of the impenitent kitty world and will be reluctant to say goodbye. Ages 3 — up." Review:

"[N]ot so much reading experiences as explorations of how a book is a creative, interactive tool." School Library Journal

About the Author

Viviane Schwarz is the author-illustrator of Shark and Lobster's Undersea Adventure and the highly acclaimed picture book The Adventures of a Nose.

Of There are Cats she says, "I thought, wouldn't it be nice if you could give someone a book that's not just about cats, but actually full of cats? This book is a place for three friendly cats to live, and it contains everything they need to be happy — except someone to play with."

She grew up in Germany but now lives in London.

There are indeed cats in this book, three of them. But not on the first page, nor on the second. The reader finds them hiding under blankets on the third page, and they're ready to play with you and their other favorite things: yarn and cardboard boxes, followed by some yummy fish. There is a near-disastrous meeting with a tidal wave, that only the reader can save them from ... whew! A quick blow on the page and everyone is safe, dry, and ready to finish the story.

I gave this book to a 3-year-old nephew, who promptly had to have it read to him 6 times in a row without stopping. This is a perfect book for preschool-aged readers (and grown-up cat lovers.)
