I am a Soto Zen priest, a meditator for 20+ years, and a long-time teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (the Jon Kabat-Zinn model for bringing mindfulness to everyday life). When new people come to Desert Mirror Zendo or ask me to suggest a beginning Buddhism book, I just hand them a copy of Buddhism Plain & Simple. (I buy it in bulk and always keep multiple copies on hand.) For anyone looking to begin a new Buddhist practice, or for Buddhist teachers who want to brush up on teaching the basics, this book lays it all out in simple, accessible language, with no jargon or unnecessary cultural trappings. That's my idea of skillful means.
