Publisher Comments:

Locked in a coffin-like darkness, there is nothing to distract me from my memories of killing Reyad. He deserved to die—but according to the law, so do I. Here in Ixia, the punishment for murder is death. And now I wait for the hangman's noose.

But the same law that condemns me may also save me. Ixia's food taster—chosen to ensure that the Commander's food is not poisoned—has died. And by law, the next prisoner who is scheduled to be executed—me—must be offered the position.

Yelena is condemned to die in the military state of Ixia because she has committed a murder. But she receives a reprieve: instead, she is to become the Commander's poison taster, a job for which she is trained by the mysterious assassin, Valek. So begins a tale of murder, magic, and mystery in a world richly imagined. A great start to a great trilogy, a sort of Tamora Pierce for grown-ups. The series is exciting and addictive.

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Maria V. Snyder has created strong characters that you can love and fight for. This book is a must read for anyone out-growing young-adult fantasy, or anyone that just loves a good and easily accessible fantasy novel.
