Publisher Comments:

Medical treatment across Africa suffers from diagnostic insufficiency, argues Okeke (biology, Haverford College). There is a widespread failure to provide adequate application of laboratory diagnosis, which can identify the microorganisms responsible for ill health and therefore more accurately target the disease and halt its spread. She describes how this diagnostic insufficiency leads to fever being frequently misdiagnosed as a symptom of malaria, leading to the mistaken prescription of anti-malarial drugs, and details the role of misdiagnosis in the spread of infectious disease. She concludes the work by arguing that it is not only necessary, but practicable, to invest in clinical laboratory infrastructure for Africa. IRL is an imprint of Cornell U. Press.
