Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

"Saving the Text" cuts through Jacques Derrida's complex blend of philosophy, commentary, and elaborate wordplay to ascertain his place in the history of criticism and the significance of Glas as literary event. <P>Distinguished critic and scholar Geoffrey Hartman explores the usefulness of Derrida's style of close reading for English and American scholarship and establishes its relevance to the division that has arisen between European and Anglo-American critical approaches. In addition, he discusses Derrida's exepesis in relation to theological commentary. Hartman's culminating "counterstatement" to Derrida is a new theory of literature, both speculative and pragmatic.

Review:

"Geoffrey Hartman, who has made a career of introducing continental philosophy
to Anglo-American critical thought, here tries to ease our encounter with one of France's latest intellectual exports—Jacques Derrida, the antiphilosopher of deconstruction. The result, clearly not intended for the un-initiated, equals the alternating playfulness and impenetrability of its subject. With such chapters as 'How to Reap a Page' and 'Psychoanalysis: the French Connection,' Hartman frequently suffers from Derridean excess while ostensibly explaining Derrida's dense text, Glas. This is meta-commentary in extremis: Hartman reading Derrida reading Genêt and Hegel." Reviewed by Daniel Weiss, Virginia Quarterly Review (Copyright 2006 Virginia Quarterly Review)
