Publisher Comments:

The spring of 1943 was a desperate season for the Jews of Brussels. The resistance movement had successfully bombed the SS headquarters that January, but anti-Jewish laws were tightening, and a camp had been set up in the nearby town of Mechelen to transport Belgian Jews to Auschwitz. The time had come for action. One day in April, resistance fighter Youra Livchitz, a young doctor, discovered the departure date of the next transport train. With only one weekend in which to organize a raid, Youra recruited two school friends, Jean Franklemon and Robert Maistriau, to pull off one of the most daring rescues of the entire war. Equipped with only three pairs of pliers, a hurricane lamp covered in red paper, and a single pistol, the men ambushed the train, which was transporting 1,618 Jews to Auschwitz. These three lone men freed seventeen men and women before the German guards opened fire. Miraculously, by the time the convoy had reached the German border another 225 prisoners had managed to escape unharmed and found shelter with the locals. In a testament to the solidarity of the Belgians, no one was betrayed. No one, that is, except the three young rescuers, who were turned in by a double agent, imprisoned, and killed. Marion Schreiber's gripping book about the only Nazi death train in World War II to be ambushed draws on private documents, photographs, archive material, and police reports, as well as original research, including interviews with the surviving escapees. Like "Schindler's List, The Twentieth Train creates a vivid, moving portrait of heroism under impossible circumstances.

I AM THE SURVIVING SON OF lOUIS DE GROOT, JUST TO MAKE THE RECORDS STRAIGHT ON THIS BOOK.

IT WAS MY FATHER LOUIS DE GROOT THAT ORGANIZED THE ENTIRE ESCAPE INSIDE THE CAMP, HE GOT HELP FROM THE OUTSIDE THROUGH THE CONTACT OF MY MOTHER AND OUR MAID, IT WAS MY MOTHER THAT BAKED CAKES WITH FILES IN THEM AND JAM POTS WITH CIGARETTES CUT IN HALF IN THE JAM.
MY FATHER HAD TO BECOME A WAGON MASTER FIRST BEFORE HE COULD ORGANIZE EVERYTHING ON THE INSIDE, HE HAD TO MAKE SURE FIRST OF ALL THAT THE FOOD GIVEN TO SOME HAD TO BE GIVEN IN A LOT, SO THAT MY FATHER COULD EQUALLY DISTRIBUTE IT TO AS MANY AS POSSIBLE SO THEY WOULD BE AS FIT AS POSSIBLE WHEN THE TIME CAME TO JUMP.
HE KNEW THE RAIL ROAD BY HEART AND KNEW EXACTLY WHERE THE TRAIN WOULD SLOW DOWN IN THE RIGHT CURB, HE INSTRUCTED ALL WHEN THEY DID JUMP TO LAY FLAT AGAINS THE MOUNT AND NOT RUN IN THE FIELD, SO THAT THE MACHINE GUNS COULD NOT SHOOT THEM, SINCE THEY COULD NOT BE LIFTED UP TO SHOOT DOWN AND THE TRAIN COULD NOT STOP SINCE THERE WHERE NOT ENOUGH SOLDIERS TO STOP THE ESPCAPE. HE DISTRIBUTED TO EACH WAGON MASTER A FILE TO FILE THE BARS IN THE SMALL WINDOW OF THE CATTLE CART, MY FATHER WAS INTERVIEWED BY SPIELBERG AND FILMED AS WELL, HE PASSED AWAY ON THE 9TH OF JANUARY 2006, THERE IS MORE TO THIS SMALL EPISODE, THIS IS ONLY PART OF IT.
MY FATHER WORKED WITH THE "WITTE BRIGADE" WHITE BRIGADE OF BELGIUM, ALSO WITH THE CHIEF OF POLICE OF BRUSSELS VICTOR DELME, AND AFTER ESCAPING HELPED A LOT OF ENGLISH COMMANDOSE WITH FAULSE PAPERS AND UNIFORMS WHEN THEY WHERE PARACHUTED IN BELGIUM.

I ONLY WAS AWARE OF THIS BOOK BY MY FRIEND IN BELGIUM THAT CAME ACROSS IT, UNFORTUNATLY IT WAS ABOUT ONE MONTH AFTER MY FATHER PASSED AWAY.
NEED TO ASK MORE QUESTIONS? LET ME KNOW, I WILL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER.

THERE ARE STILL ENOUGH WITNESS TO THE ABOVE FACTS THAT ARE STILL ALIVE.

RONALD DE GROOT
