Synopses & Reviews

Synopsis:

Nearly one hundred years after his death at age thirty-five, Shiki Masaoka remains one of the most important figures in modern Japanese poetry. Although perhaps best known for his haiku poetry, Shiki revitalized the tanka form — unrhymed verse of five lines containing 5, 7, 5, 7, and 7 syllables, respectively. This volume includes the poems in the original Japanese script with romaji renderings, skilled, precise translations, and reference notes containing invaluable biographical, historical, and cultural information.
