Publisher Comments:

With a family always on the move, popularity and the ability to fit in quickly are vital to Brent Bishops high school survival. When he blows his chances with the girl of his dreams in front of everyone, hes devastated. Brent tries to end it all in a fatal car crash, but instead he finds an unlikely beginning. Hes sent on a journey of repentance—a cross-country trip building whirligigs. His wind toys are found by people in need: a Maine schoolgirl yearning for her first love, a Miami street-sweeper desperate for peace and quiet, a kid in Washington who just wants to play baseball, and a San Diego teenager dealing with loss. Brents whirligigs bring hope to others, but will they be able to heal the wounds deep inside himself?

Paul Fleischman has created a literary adventure of the human heart and soul with this book. It will capture the spirit and conscience of all its readers from the young adult onward. A young man's tragedy turns into a journey of self discovery highlighting what becomes his triumph as he transverses the United States in remembrance of the young girl he kills in a car accident. Beautifully written in his own unique style intertwining and interconnecting multiple faucets of the story, Fleischman takes the reader on a literary rollercoaster guiding them along an emotional adolescent coming of age. Embark on a voyage of self discovery with this book and the struggle of human emotions associated with adolescence and transitioning to adulthood made even more difficult through the tragedy associated with death and the compassion it can bring out in all of us.
