Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In efforts to deal with that pervasive disease racism, human relations practitioners have become increasingly convinced that the American form of the disease is most effectively treated as a White problem that severely damages its White victims, as well as those against whom it is directed. More, since White racism is a White problem, it is the business of White people to resolve it. "We must not," says the author, "place the burden of changing White attitudes and behavior upon the members of minority races. It is not their responsibility to tell us how to change. It is ours."

Maintaining that "White people must 'own' their whiteness before they can effectively rid themselves of racism," in this book she presents a group training program in which White people work together in a non-threatening environment to alter deeply ingrained, often unconscious racist attitudes and then embark on a program of behavior change.

Review:

"White Awareness can help any of us clarify our personal attitudes as well as the social sources of those feelings." Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Synopsis:

In White Awareness, "a group training program is presented in which white people work together in a nonthreatening environment to alter deeply ingrained, often unconscious racist attitudes and then embark on a program of behavioral change. The program has been used with measurable success in many settings. It can be adapted to the specific setting and needs of the participants. After an introduction explaining the principles on which the program is based, a detailed step-by-step training format is presented. The six group experiences, called stages, center on the following themes: racism, definitions and inconsistencies; confronting the reality of racism; dealing with feelings; cultural differences; exploring cultural racism, the meaning of whiteness; individual racism; and developing action strategies. Instructions and suggestions for conducting each session are provided, along with recommended readings, lists of materials required, and sources of materials." Social Work Research and Abstracts.
