TREASURE SHIP by Dennis Powers is the powerfully written story of the S.S. Brother Jonathan. From its keel being laid in 1850 to its tragic sinking with its horde of gold in the treacherous ocean currents off Crescent City, Ca. in 1865, the reader journeys with the ill fated ship, the lives fo some of its colorful passengers, the ship's famous owners and how used in the Atlantic/Pacific Oceans. This incredibly researched book fascinates one as it touches upon ocean currents, weather patterns, economics, historical life, gold fever, life on board an ocean traveling paddle wheeler, to the subsequent attempts by salvors to locate the wreck. Once found, the story of the S.S. Brother Jonathan is enmeshed with the embittered bureaucratic power of the state of California that lands at the U.S. Supreme Court, the battles between the principal salvors/investors, and questions about the authenticity of some of the gold. All in all, a most enjoyable and extremely engaging read.
