This book should be read. Grau won the Pulitzer, but she has not received the broad-based recognition that she deserves. Grau's writing is beautifully crafted, and her portrail of African American and white cultures of the Southern US is unparalleled. She presents challenging topics without seeking to lay blame. Her messages are as complex as the South itself, and they remain highly pertinent today. If you read The Keepers of the House, you'll want to read more of her work, and you'll be richly rewarded for it.
