Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In the years between the two world wars, Montparnasse, on the Left Bank of Paris, was a hotbed of artistic experimentation, social change, and notorious affairs. Man Ray, the renowned photographer, was there to document it all: he took his camera into cafes, salons, artists' studios, and writer's homes, and the resulting pictures provide a singular — and intimate — perspective on this legendary period in cultural and art history.<P>Well-known cultural and social historian Herbert R. Lottman interweaves Man Ray's biography, filled with intriguing stories of artists, models, dealers, poets, and hangers-on, with his stunning black-and-white images of everyone from Picasso, Duchamp, Dali, and Gertrude Stein to the famed model Kiki, poet Andre Breton, and Marcel Proust on his deathbed. The result is an enthralling view of that remarkable time and place, a subject that has endless appeal.

Charles Dukes, January 26, 2011 (view all comments by Charles Dukes)
A thorough single volume, and a scholarly and compelling read- a rare combo. Both a biography of Man Ray and a broad art history encompassing the many, many facets of 20th century art and culture. Although focused on the 1920s and 1930s in Montparnasse, the author includes masses of background and glimpses of the future to help us understand events. Lottman places Man Ray into the center of it all, an essential man. Succinct portraits of individual artists and writers, and an acute understanding of the theories and the realities of the the movements described, placed in their time and context, make this essential reading. The book received some minor criticism for missing a minor fact or two, but everything essential and more is there. Published in 2001it was my best read in 2010.
