by Tim Gunn and Kate Moloney

A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The massively popular Project Runway, with over 2 million viewers every week, introduced the world to a new fashion authority: Tim Gunn. As the show’s style consultant, Tim has won over television audiences everywhere with his unique brand of honest, incisive advice. He's been featured in Entertainment Weekly, the New York Post, and Metro, and is quickly on his way to becoming a household name. Now, for the first time, readers everywhere can benefit from Tim's fashion wisdom in Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste, and Style.

Tim discusses every aspect of creating and maintaining your personal style, all in the witty and reassuring voice that millions of fans adore. Hot topics include how to dress for everyday occasions, how to shop (from designer to chain stores to vintage), how to mix your best "fashion cocktail," how to buy clothes for a man, how to be your own best fashion designer, and much more. Whether you're a seasoned fashionista or a style neophyte, Tim can show you how to "make it work!".

Review:

"Plucked straight from Parsons's New School for Design, television network Bravo found a surprising hero in Project Runway style mentor Gunn, whose catch phrase 'make it work' has inspired an undeniable following of armchair fashionistas. Though he'll admit that book writing isn't easy, this venture marks another feather in his tasteful cap. A precursor of sorts to his new series on Bravo, Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, this accessible guidebook covers it all, including the 'hunt,' 'stalk' and 'pounce' of 'shopping at its most instinctual' (inspired by cheap, forward-looking clothiers H&M), what to ask yourself before taking advantage of a bargain (is it season-appropriate?), the difference between a fashion icon and a mentor (Gunn's the former, Coco Chanel the latter) and full-on closet reconstruction. Gunn's friendly, conversational prose will give readers the feeling of a face-to-face encounter, and Runway fans will be happy to find Gunn hasn't abandoned his colorful metaphors (shopping as 'safari') and 50-cent words ('insouciant'). Whether revealing the secrets of 'The Under Arsenal' or ruminating on the 'tone' and 'diction' of a handbag, Gunn's text is clever, a touch waggish, and highly practical for both ensemble mavens and fashion criminals." There seems to be no one more qualified or equipped to ponder or even, dare I say, dictate 'quality, taste, and style' than Tim." -Sarah Jessica Parker, actor/producer

Tim Gunn and Kate Moloney have written a book that is very amusing, but quite light on specific advice.

If you are looking for a fashion how-to, this book won't do. Gunn and Moloney's objective is clearly to get you to refine your wardrobe with an eye toward "quality, taste and style," not to hold your hand in the dressing room.

This book is a very fun read and intended to introduce and reinforce general guidelines for fashion. There are a few "must haves" and a lot of inspiration for finding out "who you are" and trusting in yourself.

Tim Gunn's new Bravo show is precisely modeled on this book. If you've seen the show, the book will only serve as a supplement; most of this ground will be very familiar.

The book is very fun to read (you can just hear his voice) and has value as inspiration. Gunn wants you to find your own place in the fashion world and he makes you want that, too. Plus a personal assistant and a million bucks for clothes.
